The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development on Friday launched a nationwide dashboard that allows residents, local officials and researchers to examine how public housing authorities perform and use federal housing resources.
Announced October 30, the Public Housing Authority Accountability Dashboard brings together performance ratings, funding information and public housing and Housing Choice Voucher statistics. Users can search individual agencies, compare results across states and generate reports identifying authorities facing operational or financial problems.
What the dashboard shows
The tool displays scores from HUD’s Public Housing Assessment System and Section 8 Management Assessment Program, along with agency designations ranging from high performer to troubled. It also provides information about public housing units, vouchers, budget authority and the share of available funding and vouchers being used.
Reports can be filtered to identify agencies in receivership or under monitoring, as well as those facing funding shortfalls. HUD says the tool includes a glossary and user guide to help interpret the data.
HUD cites oversight actions
In its announcement, HUD said 77 public housing authorities had been removed from troubled status since January 2025 and seven had been declared in substantial default. Those figures are reported by the agency and have not been independently audited by WRE News.
The dashboard is a transparency initiative, not a new housing subsidy or federal funding appropriation. Its value will depend in part on the completeness and timeliness of the underlying information.
Why it matters
Public housing authorities administer housing assistance that affects residents and property markets across the country. Easier access to comparable performance and utilization figures may help communities examine whether existing resources are being effectively deployed and where additional oversight is warranted.
HUD announced the launch on October 30, 2026; its release did not specify an exact launch time.
