President Joe Biden is using today’s observance of Earth Day to announce $7 billion in new grants for residential solar projects in low- and middle-income communities.

The Associated Press reported the grants will be awarded by the Environmental Protection Agency, with funds being allocated to 60 recipients. Forty-nine of the grants are state-level awards, while six are being presented to Native American tribes and five cover multi-state recipients.

The administration stated more than 900,000 households will be impacted by the grants, which can used for rooftop solar and community solar gardens. The projects are expected to reduce emissions by the equivalent of 30 million metric tons of carbon dioxide and save households $350 million annually, according to unnamed senior administration officials.

The grants are coming out of the Solar for All program, which is part of the $27 billion “green bank” created in the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act.
