The Chicago Bears leadership reiterated that it remains focused on leaving Illinois to build a new stadium across the state line in Hammond, Indiana. However, the team stopped short of making a declaration for an out-of-state relocation.
The Chicago Sun-Times reports that Kevin Warren, the team’s president and CEO, informed reporters at a press conference that a due diligence study at the Lost Marsh site in Hammond was completed and considered “viable.” The team is also evaluating the nearby Wolf Lake Terminal site for its new venue.
However, Warren would not provide a timeline on when a final decision would be made, and he also gave the impression that the team could remain in Illinois. He said the Bears had “minimal” conversations with Illinois lawmakers since the June 5 decision to pursue a development in Hammond.
Bears Chairman George McCaskey, who joined Warren at the press conference, added the reason there were only “minimal” discussions were because “if there are substantive discussions to be had, let’s have ‘em.” McCaskey also noted the team will keep its name as Chicago Bears if it relocates to Hammond or decides to build a stadium in the Chicago suburb of Arlington Heights.
