Located in northeastern France, Alsace is a picturesque region on the Rhine River that’s synonymous with wine. Strasbourg, the main city and capital, is home to the European Parliament, and historic, fairytale-like villages are scattered throughout the scenic countryside that’s full of rolling hills.
Julian Walker, a director at the London-based real estate firm Spot Blue, said that Strasbourg is centrally situated in Europe and easily accessible from numerous cities on the continent, making it an appealing place to buy a home.
“Paris is west, Zurich is south, Munich is east, and Frankfurt is north. All these cities have direct trains into Strasbourg,” he said.
Alsace is a vast area, and driving from north and south takes around three and a half hours, according to Martine Brun, a real estate agent with Best Consulting Invest in Alsace. From west to east, the drive is about an hour, she said.

Alsace is an affordable place to invest in a home, compared with other wine regions in Europe, according to Mr. Walker.
“You would be pushed to spend more than a million dollars on a property here and can find quality homes for as little as US$250,000 [about €230,000],” he said. But he warned that buyers should manage their expectations because contemporary properties are rare. “That sleek look, by and large, doesn’t really exist in Alsace,” Mr. Walker said.
Housing Stock
Residential properties in Alsace are primarily single-family homes, according to Ms. Brun. Strasbourg has some apartments in its historic center, she said, and they’re usually in 18th- or 19th-century buildings that are no more than four-stories high.
