Elon Musk’s SpaceX has secured a 100% property tax abatement for its proposed $55 billion Terafab chip manufacturing project in Grimes County, Texas.
SpaceX said the project is crucial to its efforts to expand into advanced computing infrastructure and domestic chip production. The company is expected to launch a potentially record-breaking IPO, with an expected valuation of $1.75 trillion, and investors are watching to see if it can expand from its longtime focus on space into AI and semiconductor manufacturing.
Reuters reports the 4-1 vote by the county commissioners following a hearing last Wednesday ignored angry opposition from local residents who warned Musk’s project would be disruptive to the community and its resources. Grimes County has a population of 34,000 and features sprawling ranches and open land. The proposed development site will be located near the Gibbons Creek Reservoir, which is home to a large wildlife population.
John Federspiel, senior director of Starlink Product Engineering at SpaceX, addressed the commissioners at the hearing and declared, “We recognize that large projects bring legitimate questions about infrastructure and environmental stewardship. Our company is committed to proactively addressing those concerns and taking care of them responsibly.”
Musk weighed in later in an X post that said, “SpaceX will still be paying an annual amount that increases tax revenue for Grimes County by ~25% and will be by far the biggest source of revenue for the county.”
Grimes County Commissioner David Tullos, the sole dissenting vote on the commission, was skeptical of the deal, stating, “I have a real problem with the fact that we’re going to be giving them a 100% tax abatement.” He added the agreement would only provide the county with a payment in lieu of taxes (PILOT) of $20 million a year.
Several residents at the hearing wondered why Musk’s company was getting very generous tax incentives.
“On a community level, I’m against the tax abatement for the world’s richest man,” said resident Sadie May. “You cannot convince me that Elon needs assistance from Grimes County for this project. You have been offering the world’s richest man a Black Friday deal on our resources and our way of life.”
