The FBI arrested the real estate developer at the center of the scandal that resulted in the impeachment of Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton.
The Associated Press reported that Nate Paul, the president and CEO of World Class Capital Group, was arrested yesterday afternoon and booked into a jail in Austin, where he is being held on a federal detainer for an unspecified felony. Paul has been under federal investigation since 2019 when FBI agents searched his home and offices in Austin. The following year, eight members of Paxton’s office approached the FBI with allegations that Paxton abused his authority to help Paul in his dealings with federal investigators.
The FBI’s investigation of Paxton is ongoing. Last month, the Republican-dominated Texas House of Representatives voted to impeach Paxton (who is also a Republican) over 20 charges of misconduct that included bribery and abuse of office. Paxton’s impeachment will shift to the Texas Senate, where a trial will be conduct that could result in his permanent removal from office and a banishment from holding elected office in Texas.
