Now, here’s something that you don’t find in most homes listed for sale – a jail cell.
RealEstate.com.au reports a residence on the market in Melbourne, Australia, that was once a police station had been converted to a five-bedroom residence in the 1980s. But for some reason, a fully intact jail cell with a barred door and concrete toilet was retained after the police station was dismantled.
Aarun Tong, the listing agent with Ray White Carnegie, admitted that he was not prepared to find that unlikely feature at the residence.
“Honestly, it stopped me in my tracks,” Tong said. “It’s definitely one of the most unique features I’ve ever seen in residential real estate, a bit of Aussie history tucked away in someone’s backyard.”
The home is scheduled to for an auction sale on Aug. 2, and Tong predicted the jail cell will probably not be retained by its next owners.
“In its current state, I’d say it leans more towards a development opportunity,” Tong said. “You could do something really cool with it.”
