The City of Tempe, Arizona, has begun demolition on a shuttered shopping center that will become the site of an affordable housing complex.
12news.com reports that after the former Tempe Food City shopping center was closed in 2021, city officials saw an opportunity to address the shortage of affordable housing.
“Our concern was that this was going to be left up to the private market and become unaffordable luxury apartments,” said Mayor Corey Woods. “About three months later, the City of Tempe spent nearly $10.7 million acquiring this site for the purpose of bringing affordable housing and a grocery store back to this location.”
The new complex will be called Dorsey Station and will feature 400 housing units, with 90% designated as affordable and 10% market rate. There will also be a grocery store at the property.
Woods said construction could begin as early as this coming winter, with the first residents moving in by late 2028.
