A California hotel that can trace its operations back 150 years ago has been sold to a Native American tribe.

The 238-room Mission Inn Hotel & Spa in Riverside was purchased by the Yuhaaviatam of San Manuel Nation in Highland. The federally recognized tribe’s San Manuel Investment Authority, through its affiliated entities, acquired the property for an undisclosed sum; Kelly Roberts, who owned and ran the hotel with her late husband Duane Roberts, bought the property for $15.6 million in the mid-1990s.

“The Mission Inn holds a special place in our hearts,” said Yuhaaviatam of San Manuel Nation Chairwoman Lynn Valbuena. “Generations of our family love the inn for its charming ambience and for the memories we’ve made there over the years. We recognize its historic, economic and cultural significance to Riverside and the region and would be delighted to include The Mission Inn in our non-gaming hospitality portfolio.”

The hotel opened in 1876 as a boarding house and was first expanded into a full-service hotel in 1903. The hotel is celebrated for its collection of antiques and artwork, including a bell dating back to 1247, and it has become a holiday season destination through its annual Festival of Lights celebration.

The Yuhaaviatam of San Manuel Nation maintains a portfolio of California lodging establishments that includes Waldorf Astoria Monarch Beach Resort & Club in Dana Point, and the Yaamava’ Resort & Casino in San Bernardino County.
