Renovations at Johnson Hagood Stadium, the football venue for The Citadel Military College of South Carolina, have been halted following the discovery of what are believed to be historic gravesites.
WCBD reports the Charleston-based college is now collaborating with an archaeological consultant and the State Historic Preservation Office on the next step, which would follow city and state guidance on the handling, exhumation, and reinterment of remains, which will most likely take place at an expanded and protected area on the south side of the stadium.
The 11,500-seat stadium opened in 1927 on the former site of a site-owned burial ground. The initial assessments on the rediscovered remains suggest they date back to the 1800s.
“We will continue to follow archaeological best practices and guidance provided by the State Historic Preservation Office and coordinate with various stakeholders throughout this project and future construction activities,” said Jonathan Hoffman, The Citadel’s vice president of communications and marketing.
