The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s (HUD) Office of Housing Counseling announced it will make $10 million in grant funding available to eligible housing counseling agencies.
According to a press release from the department, the funds will enable the agencies “to provide culturally sensitive and linguistically appropriate services for pre- and post-purchase housing counseling, aiming to increase homeownership rates among historically underserved communities.”
“HUD is committed to expanding access to homeownership, especially for those who have been shut out of homebuying opportunities for far too long,” said HUD Secretary Marcia Fudge. “Housing counselors across America offer invaluable information and guidance. I am pleased that even more people will be able to access their services, purchase homes, and begin building wealth, thanks to today’s announcement.”

Another waste of taxpayer money. We don’t need more “culturally sensitive and linguistically appropriate” services. We are all Americans. Americans are one culture, a melting pot. We are the most giving individuals on the face of the earth, and at the same time we expect personal responsibility. Quit trying to divide us.
Latino buyers is still very much underestimated market. Hablas espanol? This market could very well determine if we could hit that projected 10-15% from 2023.
That is such a huge waste going into the wrong pockets!!! Realtors counsel and help first time home buyer ls all the time FREE! Lenders counsel homebuyers on what they need to apply and qualify for loans FREE! More beauicratic red tape, that could be better served by BUILDING homes for “underserved”community!!!
What is the specific grant that can be seen and researched on grants.gov please? I do not see any mention of this specific HUD program. What is the definition of “underserved communities” it sounds like a line is being drawn, and that certain ethnic groups of potential buyers in the US will NOT qualify for this “grant”.
I am in favor of increasing home ownership opportunities to ALL people, races, religions, and incomes. This article suggests that some Americans will not qualify for this grant money because of their race. I do not understand this program, and I’m a licensed real estate Broker in 2 states.
Instead of counseling how about giving first time homeowners the grant.
Or pay closing costs.
Young families can’t afford to purchase on Long Island even with two incomes!!
What constitutes undeserved communities?! As far as I can see ALL are affected.
Counseling is not what they need. !!
They keep bailing out the inflation. That is all they are bailing out.
What criteria are they using to classify “underserved”? This is so disappointing and squandering money paid by ALL tax payers. How about take those funds and put it back in the pockets of hard working families with an incentive to use it for a down payment? Counseling? Really? They’ve lost the pulse of what’s really going on in the day to day lives of most Americans as it pertains to buying a house. Start talking to some working Realtors who would love to help their clients (all clients not just what you classify as underserved), who can’t scrape together a down payment. Oh wait, that’s right. They decided to wage war on the Realtors. Entirely unhelpful on all fronts. Try again.
ALL TALK. How about, as others have mentioned, down payment assistance AND MAYBE, JUST MAYBE create some affordable housing for Seniors. Rather than giveaway $ to NON Citizens.
