An initiative to gather voter signatures for a November referendum on abolishing Ohio’s property taxes is falling short of its goals.

WJW reports the Committee to Abolish Property Tax in Ohio needs to secure more than 413,000 signatures from at least half of Ohio’s 88 counties by July 1. The group set a goal of 620,000 signatures, but as of this week it only acquired 305,000.

“We are calling on all Ohioans to help us reach or surpass our goal of 620,000,” said Brian Massie, a co-chairman of the committee.

Massie acknowledged that many Ohioans have been skeptical of the complete abolishment of property taxes, which would result in the loss of $24 billion in revenue.

“People always say, ‘Brian, how are you going to replace all of the property tax dollars?’ Our response to that is, we are not going to,” Massie said.

The committee has asked that all outstanding petitions to be returned by June 1. At that time, it will determine whether to push ahead or pursue another strategy.
