One of the most iconic entertainment venues in Los Angeles is getting a new lease on life after being closed since the pandemic.
Variety reports Sony Pictures Entertainment announced plans to restore the Cinerama Dome, a historic theater celebrated for its geodesic dome design and 86-foot-wide panoramic screen. The theater opened in 1963 and has been the site of numerous high-profile movie premieres. Pacific Theatres, which owned the venue, closed the Cinerama Dome in 2020 and the onset of the Covid pandemic, but the theater remained shuttered after the company filed for bankruptcy in 2021.
“There is no moviegoing destination anywhere in the world that commands the affection, history, and cultural significance of the Cinerama Dome. It represents the kind of singular experience we value and champion,” said Ravi Ahuja, chairman and CEO, Sony Pictures Entertainment. “This is a meaningful moment for our company, our industry, and Los Angeles. We look forward to honoring and extending the Dome’s extraordinary legacy.”
In addition to restoring the Cinerama Dome with the goal of a 2028 reopening, Sony will also reopen the adjacent 14-screen theater complex that was formerly the ArcLight Cinemas. That venue will operate as an Alamo Drafthouse Cinema and offer the brand’s mix of dine-in services with eclectic movie presentations.
