A pair of Mexican nationals who were arrested last November for fraudulently selling San Diego properties they did not own have pleaded guilty to federal charges of bank fraud and bank fraud conspiracy.
According to the charges brought against them, Victor Hugo Villalobos Almazan and his wife Nayeli Noemi Montoya Rodriguez entered the country on tourist visas and pretended to be the owners of vacant or undeveloped plots of real estate in San Diego. They sold the properties to unwitting third parties by forging signatures of notaries and wiring the proceeds abroad to bank accounts in Mexico and Jordan.
The couple netted nearly $1 million from two illegal real estate sales that occurred between March and April 2023. They are scheduled to be sentenced on Sept. 4, and each defendant faces a maximum sentence of 30 years in federal prison and a fine of up to $250,000 for each charge.
