New York City has officially ended the migrant arrival center that has been operating within the historic Roosevelt Hotel.
The Associated Press reports the center’s last full day in operation was on Monday, with the hotel becoming vacant on Tuesday afternoon. The migrant services that were provided at the hotel will now be offered at other shelter locations across the city.
In addition to the arrival center services, the hotel also provided housing for migrant families with children. The Trump administration’s crackdown on illegal immigration has resulted in fewer migrants requiring special services from the city – according to the office of Mayor Eric Adams, less than 100 new migrants were registered in the city for the week ending June 22.
Earlier this year, the hotel’s owner – the government of Pakistan – contracted the brokerage JLL (NYSE:JLL) as the exclusive agent to market the property to developers and investors after the city’s lease for the property expires this month. The Roosevelt opened in 1924 and has more than 1,000 rooms. At its peak, it was one of the city’s great hotels and gained national prominence with its New Year’s Eve radio broadcasts starring the in-house band led by Guy Lombardo.
