The typical realtor is a 57-year-old white female who attended college and owned her home, according to the 2026 Member Profile published by the National Association of Realtors (NAR).

NAR’s current membership stands at 1.43 million, and the new study determined that 66% of all realtors were female, up from 63% last year, while 86% of the association’s members own their primary residence and 41% own a secondary property.

The study also found 53% NAR of members are affiliated with an independent company while 86% are independent contractors at their firms. The median tenure for a realtor with their current firm is six years.

As for the financial side of the profession, the median gross income for realtors is $59,200, up from $58,100 in 2024. Realtors with 16 or more years of experience have a median gross income of $88,500, up from $78,900 in 2024.

Realtors shell out $9,530 in their total median business expenses, up from $8,010 in 2024. Vehicle costs ($1,580) are the largest expense category.

“The real estate market has been operating under suppressed conditions for more than three years, and yet the typical realtor continues to gain experience and stay committed to the profession,” said Jessica Lautz, NAR deputy chief economist. “What we are seeing is a more seasoned industry—professionals who are leaning on referrals, repeat clients and deep market knowledge to navigate one of the most challenging buyer environments in decades.”
