Indiana Colts cornerback Sauce Gardner is suing a Michigan construction company for allegedly defrauding him in a Detroit real estate investment.
TMZ reports the NFL star was advised by Nicholas Sanborn of Sanborn Construction on the acquisition of a 102-year-old apartment building in Detroit. Gardner, who said he was informed an adjacent property was also for sale, invested over $900,000 for the acquisition.
Shortly after closing, Gardner hired Sanborn as the general contractor to renovate the property and said he wired Sanborn $500,000 for the first phase of the work. Sanborn reportedly told Gardner the work would be completed in a few months.
However, Gardner said he never heard from Sanborn again. Even worse, he discovered the adjacent property was not part of the purchase, and he also learned Sanborn was using his name in a promotional YouTube video without his permission.
Gardner ordered Sanborn to cease all work and return his $500,000. Sanborn ignored the order and 16 days later he spent $160,000 on materials at Home Depot.
Gardner suing for breach of contract, unjust enrichment, fraudulent inducement, fraudulent concealment, and negligent misrepresentation. He is seeking a full return of his money plus additional damages stemming from the deal.
Sanborn did not immediately respond to the TMZ story.
