Compass (NYSE: COMP) is reportedly negotiating for the acquisition of Berkshire Hathaway’s (NYSE: BRK) Homes Services of America, part of the Warren Buffett corporate empire.
The Wall Street Journal, sourcing its coverage from unnamed “people familiar with the matter,” reported a deal could be imminent, barring unforeseen obstacles to its completion. The potential acquisition price is uncertain, nor is it clear how the combined companies would merge.
Compass is the nation’s largest brokerage by volume, and the company reported having 17,752 by the end of 2024. Berkshire Hathaway’s HomeServices of America had about 820 brokerage offices and 270 franchisees in 2024, and its brand names include Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices and Real Living.
So much consolidation that soon we’ll be looking at monopoly problems. Only the biggest will survive and that doesn’t help the business in general. Sad to see it.
If Buffett is offloading Berkshire, shouldn’t we all be concerned about the industry?
Exactly! If Buffett saw a rosy future ahead, there would be no discussions, no sale.
Hope you will correct the story once you see it is not true.

For the record, the original story was first broken by the Wall Street Journal and then shared throughout the media, including this news site. We have asked the Journal reporters to explain what’s going on.
Thanks Phil for correcting the story. Glad to know the WSJ was your source and not you. As I work for a Home Services company, it was disturbing last night, even though I did not believe it, to see the story. I am tired of fake news, half truths, twisted truths that is in the media now and trying to be totally controlled by the current administration.” Fake news” started with denials by TRump over the scandals that permeated his first campaign in 2015-16, as well as his claim before the election that if he lost, it was because he was cheated out of it. These talking points have only been ramped up in the years since. The other lie was there is a need to Make America great again, we always were and have been considered great until the constant doubt cast by the Moan And Groan Again crowd that we are not.
Thank you!
and if it is true, which doesn’t seem to be the case, maybe Warren wants to retire and spend some of his money!
