Washington, DC-based Howard University, one of the nation’s most prominent historically Black institutions of higher learner, is in talks to open a new satellite campus in Oakland, California.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports the university has been in discussions with Oakland Mayor Barbara Lee about creating a presence in the East Bay city. University officials toured several downtown properties recently, and one unnamed source told the Chronicle that Howard is seeking approximately 60,000 square feet of space for its operations.

A spokesperson for the university stated, “We have had preliminary discussions with Mayor Lee, but it is premature to discuss any real estate endeavors in this area at this time.”

Lee confirmed the report in a statement that said, “I have been leading discussions with Howard University and will continue to engage with them about exploring opportunities in Oakland.”
