President Trump’s firing of Pam Bondi as attorney general follows extensive lobbying by Bill Pulte, the director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency, to have her ousted from office.

The New York Times, sourcing its coverage from multiple unnamed sources, reports that Pulte was among Trump advisers that sought to have Bondi removed based on her inability to successfully prosecute two of the president’s political enemies, former FBI Director James Comey and New York Attorney General Letitia James.

According to the Times, Pulte blamed Bondi for “slow-walking and bungling” the Comey and James cases. Both Comey and James were indicted, but their cases were dismissed when a judge ruled that the Trump-approved prosecutor was improperly assigned to her job.

Pulte filed criminal referrals against James, alleging that she committed mortgage fraud. Two later attempts by the Department of Justice to secure new indictments against James failed.

Pulte filed similar criminal referrals against Trump detractors Sen. Adam Schiff (D-CA) and Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA), and against Federal Reserve Gov. Lisa Cook. None of the referrals have resulted in indictments. Trump used the criminal referral against Cook as a pretext to fire her, but the Supreme Court is now weighing whether the president’s action was unconstitutional.
