While Elon Musk has a history of playing by his own rules, the San Francisco Department of Building Inspection has forced him to abide by municipal real estate codes.
According to an Associated Press report, the brightly flashing “X” sign that Musk erected last Friday on top of the headquarters of the company formerly known as Twitter has been taken down. The city department said it received 24 complaints about the sign regarding its bright illumination and potential structural safety. The sign was put up without a permit from the city.
This is the second time that Musk ran afoul with the city regarding the headquarters building. Last week, his company began removing the Twitter sign and its blue bird logo from the side of the building, but work was halted due to Musk’s failure to secure the necessary permits.
Musk acquired Twitter last year in a $44 billion deal and recently began to rebrand is as “X.” However, the platform still operates as Twitter.com.

Just move the company out of SF. They are going to fight anything you do, no matter what it is. One of the suburbs would likely be very happy for you to move it to their city. On second thought, take it completely out of CA. Make it hurt them in the wallet.

There are valid reasons for sign and building permits. Musk just needs to follow the rules like every other business does. He’s really not “special”. If we’re next to him and his flashing sign was disrupting your business would you have the same opinion.
Yes, yes, yes… like don’t do drugs in the city, don’t defecate all over the sidewalks, don’t steal from the stores, don’t piss all over the entrances to stores, don’t graffiti everything in sight, don’t throw your needles all over and in the bay, don’t accumulate so much junk you block wheelchairs from having access to the sidewalk, don’t break into vehicles, don’t break into stores causing them to leave… sounds like the city has it all under control! I hope X moves and SF continues to spiral out of control because they have no clue or desire to fix it!

24 complaints (out of millions of citizens), probably from the same extremist. “structurally unsafe” apparently the person complaining is a structural engineer and would know that. Interesting how knowledgeable that average complainer is.
There aren’t millions of people living in SF. The population is approximately 815,000 as of 2021. Even if there were zero complaints, signs in all cities require permits to ensure they are structurally safe and follow guidelines.
You can steal everything on the shelves at Walgreens, crap in the street and burn police cars…. But Do Not disobey the building codes in SF.
