A proposed redevelopment project in Albany, New York, that was centered around the creation of an 8,000-seat minor league soccer stadium is going forward without the sports venue.
The Albany Times-Union reports the project to reanimate the downtown section of the New York capital city will replace the stadium with a three-acre park that can accommodate summer concerts.
The housing aspect of the revised proposal remains the same, with plans to build 700 units to be built during the first phase of construction and over 1,000 units to be built in subsequent phases. The development will also include a hotel, restaurants, and retail units, with the state providing $200 million in funding.
Jeff Buell, one of the developers for the project, said he was still interested in building a soccer stadium.
“The Capital Region has a million people here and a soccer stadium will work here,” he stated. “We are in talks with other municipalities and believe strongly in the potential of the region to support the idea.”
