South Dakota has become the latest state to put a renewed focus on property tax relief with an upcoming legislative task force meeting that will hear input from homeowners.
The Comprehensive Property Tax Task Force will meet on Sept. 22 at the South Dakota State Capitol in Pierre. The meeting will begin at 9:00 a.m. CDT, with public comment scheduled to begin at 11:15 a.m. CDT.
The agenda will include presentations from the state’s Department of Revenue on property tax relief programs and tax increment financing, along with input from Joseph Santos, economist and academic director of South Dakota State University’s Ness School of Management and Economics, on the effects of taxation on the housing market, and from State Sen. Jim Mehlaff (R-Pierre) outlining his proposal to substitute school property taxes with an increased sales tax.
