President Trump is renewing his effort to oust Federal Reserve Gov. Lisa Cook after the Supreme Court ruled his earlier effort to fire her did not meet legal standards.
The Wall Street Journal reports Dan Scavino, the White House deputy chief of staff, sent a letter to Cook stating that Trump “considering removing you from your position” based on a criminal referral made by Bill Pulte, the director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency, that she committed mortgage fraud in a 2021 loan application.
In his letter, Scavino gave Cook a 21-day deadline to respond to mortgage fraud charges.
“Because the allegations in the Criminal Referral reflect on your honesty, trustworthiness, and competence to perform the duties of the office you currently hold, the President has determined that there is reason to believe they constitute cause to remove you from your position,” Scavino said.
In late June, the Supreme Court ruled 5-4 that she could not be fired unless there were procedural protections in place to allow a full presentation of evidence. Cook has not been indicted by Trump’s Justice Department, and she stated the attempts to remove her were politically motivated.
Her attorney, Abbe Lowell, responded to the Scavino letter by stating, “These allegations are as baseless now as they were a year ago when President Trump tried to remove Governor Cook and interfere with the independence of the Federal Reserve. As we did before, we will challenge this latest pretext and preserve her position and the historic role of the Fed.”
