Reno-based Grand Sierra Resort (GSR) announced the groundbreaking on its new 10,000-seat arena that will be the future home of the University of Nevada men’s basketball team.
The $435 million GSR Arena will span 300,000 square feet and seat up to 10,000 guests. The new venue is scheduled to open in the fall of 2027 and is expected to host approximately 95 events annually.
The arena is the first phase of the property’s $1 billion redevelopment project, which is being promoted as the largest private capital investment in Reno’s history. The development will also include a new community ice center, a reimagined Grand Bay aquatic golf facility, a fan-centric central plaza, future housing and hotel expansion, and a 2,800-space parking garage.
“This project represents a transformative moment for Reno and northern Nevada,” said Alex Meruelo, owner of Grand Sierra Resort. “Our investment reflects not only our commitment to this community, but our belief in its future as a premier destination for sports, entertainment, and hospitality.”
“This groundbreaking signals a new era for northern Nevada and our University,” added University of Nevada President Brian Sandoval. “When completed, the Grand Sierra Resort Arena will become our region’s most compelling entertainment and sports venue while providing Wolf Pack Athletics with a dazzling home court that will be second to none.”
