The Georgia State Senate passed a bill that would create mandatory statewide property tax caps.
Fox5Atlanta.com reports Senate Bill 382 passed in a bipartisan 31-19 vote. The legislation seeks to restore a system where property value increases are limited to the rate of inflation. It also overturns the current law that enables local governments to opt out of such limits.
“We need to protect our homeowners from double-digit increases,” said Sen. Chuck Hufstetler (R-Rome), the bill’s sponsor. “This would just restore it to where the homeowner property, only it’s limited to the rate of inflation on increases as long as you stay in your home. Although the property is still unchecked. And if they want to, they can always raise the millage rate.”
The bill now heads to the Georgia House for consideration, where representatives are considering their own slate of property tax legislation.
