A Spanish fugitive real estate fraudster who been on the run since last December was apprehended in the unlikeliest of places: hiding under the kitchen sink in his mother’s apartment.
El Pais reports Carlos García Roldán disappeared from Mallorca after being sentenced to nearly 15 years in prison for scamming 240 people out of approximately $3.9 million, one of the largest real estate frauds in Spanish history. García Roldán has a history of being fugitive – he disappeared for a year in 2018 amid rising lawsuits by his victim and was eventually apprehended in Colombia.
The Spanish Civil Guard were suspicious that García Roldán was hiding at his mother’s apartment in Calella, in Barcelona province, but a surveillance of the property failed to show him coming and going from the site. However, his relatives were seeing bringing large quantities of goods to the apartment, which seemed to affirm he was inside.
A court warrant was issued to search the residence. Once inside, officers found García Roldán hiding in a cabinet under the kitchen sink and arrested him.
In addition to being deposited in a new prison residence, García Roldán is also required by the court to provide $2.3 million in compensation to his victims.
