Summary

MISMO named six inaugural FRAME Advisory Partners to help mortgage lenders and servicers implement AI oversight programs. The credential does not replace regulatory obligations.

As mortgage lenders move artificial-intelligence tools from demonstrations into production, an industry standards body is putting names to the advisers it believes can help companies govern the technology. MISMO on October 13 announced six inaugural organizations under its FRAME Advisory Partner Certification.

The group named Actualize Consulting, Crittora, Falcon Capital Advisors, Tidgewell Results Experience, Teraverde Financial and Viant Eye. The designation recognizes advisory organizations that have demonstrated familiarity with MISMO’s Framework for Responsible AI in the Mortgage Ecosystem, launched in June.

MISMO’s framework is intended to help mortgage companies identify where AI is used, evaluate risks, assign accountability, retain evidence of automated actions and build oversight into daily operations. Its advisory credential is aimed at consulting firms that help lenders and servicers implement those controls. It is not a license to originate loans, an approval of any particular AI product or a substitute for compliance with state and federal law.

The timing is significant. Mortgage companies are using software to extract borrower data, flag missing documents, assist with underwriting conditions and automate quality-control tasks. Blend reported this week that its Autopilot system touches more than 3,500 new loan files weekly. Friday Harbor separately introduced an insurance-backed pre-closing review service. Neither announcement establishes that automated processes are error-free.

AI governance is more than a procurement checklist. A lender must be able to explain which system influenced a decision, what information it relied on, whether a human could override it and what records remain if a borrower, investor or examiner questions the result. The answer may differ for document classification, pricing assistance, fraud detection and credit decisions. A policy drafted at headquarters is of limited value if the production workflow cannot show what happened to an individual file.

Teraverde founder Jim Deitch said lenders want to know how to demonstrate governance to Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac and state regulators. Crittora Chairman Doug Long emphasized the need for controls that document what an AI system was permitted to do at the moment it acted. Both firms are among the six certified advisers, so their comments also reflect a commercial interest in the new credential.

MISMO is part of the Mortgage Bankers Association’s standards ecosystem. Its framework is voluntary unless a contract or regulator independently requires a particular practice. The association did not disclose how many lenders have adopted FRAME, how many advisory applicants were assessed or whether an outside auditor tested implementation results.

For lenders, the practical value of the certification will depend on whether the advisers can produce useful inventories, testable controls and evidence that survives investor review. For borrowers, the stakes are the accuracy and explainability of increasingly automated mortgage decisions. MISMO’s next test is adoption: whether firms use the framework to change how systems operate, rather than merely to document policies they already had.
