European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde announced October 29 that she will step down on February 7, 2027, months before the end of her term. Her successor will be chosen by the European Council through the established treaty process. The ECB did not name a successor or give a reason for the decision. On the same day, the Governing Council held its deposit rate at 2.50%, main refinancing rate at 2.65% and marginal lending rate at 2.90%. Its monetary policy announcement warned of rising energy prices, inflation risks and tighter financing conditions. For European housing and commercial real estate, the decision means no immediate relief through lower policy rates, while the leadership change adds uncertainty about future policy direction. The bank reiterated that future rate decisions will depend on economic data, not a predetermined path.
