Federal Housing Finance Agency Director Bill Pulte is predicting that Federal Reserve Gov. Lisa Cook will be indicted for mortgage fraud.
Pulte passed criminal referrals to the Department of Justice (DOJ) alleging Cook committed mortgage fraud. President Trump tried to use Pulte’s referrals to fire Cook for just cause. The question of presidential authority over the Fed’s board of governors is now being considered by the US Supreme Court.
In an interview with CNBC, Pulte was asked about the status of the investigation into Cook.
“We have to prosecute mortgage fraud and, in her case, in my opinion, it is very blatant mortgage fraud,” Pulte said, adding “I do believe she will eventually be indicted. That’s just my own opinion.”
Pulte also insisted that politics did not play a role in his criminal referral, declaring, “This is not political from my perspective. I’m in charge of making sure we have a mortgage market that is safe and sound. It doesn’t matter if you’re Republican or Democrat or a Fed governor, if you committed mortgage fraud we’re going to refer it. That’s what we did with the Lisa Cook case.”
To date, the DOJ has made no public comment on the referrals regarding Cook, who has denied Pulte’s allegations.
In addition to Cook, Pulte made similar referrals against three longtime political enemies of President Trump: New York Attorney General Letitia James, Sen. Adam Schiff, and former Rep. Eric Swalwell. Pulte has not made criminal referrals against any Republican official and previously refused to answer questions regarding mortgage fraud allegations against Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, a Trump ally.
