The Florida legislature is now considering a bill that seeks to begin the process that could result in the elimination of the state’s property taxes.

Fort Myers Beach Talk reports State Sen. Jonathan Martin (R-Fort Myers) has introduced a bill that would require the Office of Economic and Demographic Research to study the possible impact of dropping property taxes and replacing them with a budget reductions and sales tax increases. Martin’s bill would require the study to be submitted to the legislature by Oct. 1. If the study is positive, the legislature could then begin to plan for a state referendum that would be held as early as November 2026.

Martin stated he did not support an increase in the state’s 6% sales tax but instead was asking “economists to do a study” on what this would involve. He added that any consumption-based tax increase to fill the property tax void “shifts payment of government services to those engaged in economic services.”

Gov. Ron DeSantis has voiced his support for eliminating property taxes on social media, but he also noted that would require changing the state’s constitution.
