A commercial property on Atlantic City’s Boardwalk that once produced the New Jersey resort’s famous saltwater taffy souvenirs is being developed as a mixed-use project for artists.
Shore Local News reports the former James Candy Company property will undergo a $20 million redevelopment to become Taffy Lofts, which will include artist studios, gallery space, a coffee shop and live-work loft apartments.
The property’s new focus follows a 2023 exhibition by the Atlantic City Arts Foundation that used the James Candy building for the 10th installment of ARTeriors, which featured a temporary presentation by more than 25 artists.
The James Candy building opened in 1921 and closed in early 2024. Earlier plans for the property included hospitality, restaurant and other mixed-use components. Developer Pat Fasano stated the opening date for Taffy Lofts will be based on the progress in the redevelopment.
