Summary

Ginnie Mae reported a $3.03 trillion outstanding mortgage-backed securities portfolio in September 2026, compared with $2.97 trillion in June. The portfolio balance is distinct from monthly securities issuance.

Ginnie Mae’s outstanding mortgage-backed securities portfolio reached $3.03 trillion in September, according to an October 13 announcement listed by the federal housing-finance agency. The milestone places the government-guaranteed securities program above $3 trillion at the close of the federal fiscal year.

The reported balance is about $60 billion higher than the $2.97 trillion portfolio Ginnie Mae disclosed for June. WRE News reported that June figure in July. The difference measures the change in outstanding portfolio size across the two reporting dates; it is not a measure of September issuance.

Ginnie Mae guarantees the timely payment of principal and interest on qualifying mortgage-backed securities backed by federally insured or guaranteed loans. Its programs provide a route to secondary-market funding for mortgages insured by the Federal Housing Administration or guaranteed through the Department of Veterans Affairs and other eligible federal programs.

For lenders, the size of the outstanding securities portfolio reflects the reach of that funding channel. The figure is a stock of securities still outstanding, not the amount of new mortgage loans originated during September. New issuance, repayments and other changes in balances all affect the total.

The agency has separately posted its September 2026 single-family, multifamily and home-equity conversion mortgage disclosure files, including monthly new-issue and portfolio datasets. Those datasets can support more detailed analysis of activity by program, but the announcement headline alone does not establish the month’s gross issuance, net growth or composition.

Ginnie Mae’s 2025 annual report recorded more than $2.8 trillion outstanding at September 30, 2025, alongside approximately $526.4 billion of MBS issuance during that fiscal year. The newly announced September 2026 balance therefore also marks growth from the prior fiscal-year close, although the agency’s full current-year issuance breakdown should be assessed separately.

The October 13 headline confirms the $3.03 trillion milestone. Additional September issuance totals and program-level comparisons should be drawn from the full monthly report rather than inferred from the outstanding balance.
