Vice President Kamala Harris will introduce a campaign proposal seeking the construction of 3 million new housing units during her first four years in office, along with a new tax incentive for builders that create properties for first-time homebuyers.

The Wall Street Journal, sourcing its reporting from unnamed “Harris campaign officials,” said the Democratic Party’s presidential nominee will officially highlight her housing initiatives on Friday in Raleigh, North Carolina, as part of the unveiling of her economic plan. Since gaining the nomination, Harris has offered no specific details on how she would address housing and other economic concerns if she was elected president.

The new housing proposals would expand on President Biden’s previous call for the creation of 2 million new homes. She will also propose a $40 billion fund to help local governments find new solutions to address housing inventory shortages – Biden previously called for a $20 billion fund. Harris is expected to repeat the Biden plan of expanding the low-income housing tax credit to developers who build low-income housing.

The Harris team offered no preview details on the new tax incentive related to builders constructing homes for first-time buyers.

Harris had only mentioned housing in passing during a recent speech in Georgia where she pledged to “take on corporate landlords and cap unfair rent increases.” However, she did not offer any specifics on how either goal would be achieved.
