Three multifamily properties adjacent to the Utah Governor’s Mansion in Salt Lake City are scheduled to be demolished as part of a plan to improve security around the governor’s residence.

Building Salt Lake reports the Utah Division of Facilities Construction filed a demolition permit request to tear down three buildings that are based to the north and the northwest of the Governor’s Mansion. The state paid $7.2 million over the past few years to buy three residential buildings that encompass a total of 23 apartment units and later refused to renew the tenant leases to ensure total vacancies ahead of the proposed demolition.

A spokesperson for the Utah Department of Public Safety stated this initiative “was deemed essential to protect those who live, work, and gather at the Historic Governor’s Mansion. While we can’t share specific security details, the upgrades will be completed in time to support the safety of Utah’s next governor, their family, and future visitors. The Division of Facilities Construction and Management (DFCM) worked closely with the property tenants to support their relocation and allowed them to take any valuable items, including fixtures and materials. The DFCM also informed nearby residents of the construction through a recent town hall.”
