Single‐family housing starts in September were at a rate of 963,000, according to data from the U.S. Census Bureau and the Department of Housing and Urban Development. Last month’s rate was 3.2% higher than the revised August figure of 933,000.

Privately‐owned housing starts in September were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.35 million, up 7% from the revised August estimate of 1.26 million but also 7.2% below the September 2022 rate of 1.46 million.

Single‐family authorizations in September were at a rate of 965,000, up 1.8% from the revised August figure of 948,000. Privately‐owned housing units authorized by building permits in September were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.47 million, which is 4.4% below the revised August rate of 1.54 million and 7.2% below the September 2022 rate of 1.58 million.

Single‐family housing completions in September were at a rate of 998,000, a 5.3% uptick from the revised August rate of 948,000. Privately‐owned housing completions in September were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.45 million, a 6.6% above the revised August estimate of 1.36 million and 1% above the September 2022 rate of 1.43 million.
