A federal judge issued an order on Friday evening that temporarily halted the Trump administration from firing employees at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) without cause and from issuing a reduction-in-force notice for the agency.

According to combined media reports, US District Judge Amy Berman Jackson – an Obama appointee – has also prohibited the administration from deleting CFPB data. The judge’s order also blocks Acting CFPB Director Russ Vought from actions that would defund the agency.

The Trump administration agreed to the temporary restrictions while the judge more fully considers a lawsuit brought by the National Treasury Employees Union. Another hearing is set for March 3. The union was joined by the NAACP and several activist groups in seeking the court’s order, claiming the agency’s entire workforce faced a mass termination order.
