The Kansas City Royals announced plans to create a new stadium within the redevelopment of Crown Center, located south of downtown Kansas City.
According to combined media reports, the $3 billion project will encompass an 85-acre site, with a new $1.9 billion stadium and surrounding mixed-use district. The city will contribute $600 million in funding, with additional funding coming from state tax credits, while $2 billion will be sourced from private financing.
The new stadium complex will be built on the site of the Hallmark Cards corporate office headquarters. The company is planning a new headquarters complex within this development.
“Our founder Ewing Kauffman wanted the Royals to be Kansas City’s forever, and he wanted the team to benefit his hometown as much as possible,” Royals CEO and Chairman John Sherman said. “Joining Hallmark with this project achieves both and extends the Hall family’s critical legacy of helping Kansas City grow.”
The Royals have played at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City since 1973; it is the fifth-oldest stadium in Major League Baseball. After Jackson County voters rejected a new sales tax to pay for stadium renovations in 2024, the team began openly searching for the site of a new home, including outside of their longtime Missouri home in the same-named metropolis in Kansas.
The team expects to begin construction on the new stadium in 2027, with an opening slated for 2030 – the same year their Kauffman Stadium lease expires.
