New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is seeking to turn an underused NYPD parking lot into an affordable housing development.
The project is designed to create 131 affordable housing units, with 30% of the new apartments reserved for formerly homeless New Yorkers. The project would also include a senior center, community space and replacement parking.
According to The Gothamist, the parking lot in Manhattan’s East Village is the first city-owned site designated for housing development by the Democratic Socialist mayor. During his campaign, Mamdani promised to create 200,000 affordable homes and preserve another 200,000 over the next 10 years.
“Today’s announcement is a testament to what can happen when we are able to cut through the red tape and unlock public land to build new affordable housing,” said Housing Preservation and Development Commissioner Dina Levy in a statement.

LOL, the goal is to reduce NYC to rubble that can never be brought back…the left is occupying cities big and small across the country and systematically destroying them. The Soviets could have only dreamed of this…
Turn his friggin house into a parking lot! Along with his parent’s
The idea is novel, however, what is the thinking that homeless citizens would move into a project where the majority of prospective tenants would shun the lifestyle of those who, in those closed thinking, wouldn’t want to live next to a “homeless” individual?
We developed MANY house projects years ago. The first years they were open they were great for middle income/low income families. Soon, they became disgusting slums and were torn down not long after being built. History is a strange idea for these leftist leaders.
This is what CC&Rs and an HOA are for.
CC&R and HOA’s will not be used, I can guarantee you. There is a cost for those and those that are homeless now sure can’t afford that. Course it will be government housing so it will be NYCity that is the HOA. and they won’t move anyone out.
I have been very active in NYC real estate for over 40 years…what are you talking about? I never remember any of this happening….-
In other words it’s free housing for all of the Muslim migrants., what a mess.
WTH 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
He’s a crazy lunatic and New Yorkers even worst for voting for him!
this guy is a lunatic, will make nyc the most undesirable city to live in, ohh i forgot los angeles seatle, portland , chicago all of course run by scum sucking shithead democzars that live off of the taaxpayer. whats is left of them.
It isn’t going to work! Those who do not study history are destined to repeat it!
131/200,000=0.000655. Enough said.
You have to burn it down before you can take full control! What a sorry voter base. They may not get exactly what they want, but they’ll get what they deserve.
Wow – people that have commented on this story are clueless and racist! Mamdani has already achieved great things for this iconic city, and is very popular with “The People” . Remember them?? Government for the People by the People! He’s even keeping the police dept parking spots! Great use of land I’d say!
Obviously, you’ve never owned Real Estate. Once constructed & you move-in the
homeless guess what happens? They have no clue how to keep the place clean like having a vacuum cleaner, Mop, trash containers, keeping food off the floors avoiding the Rat infiltration & so much more. I’ll talk to you when the health Dept. closes it down.
Shutting down those who disagree with you with accusations of racism will not convince them to hear your side. I actually thought Mayor Adams was making progress and wonder why the rich liberals who voted for Mamdami shunned their black mayor who better represented the real constituents of NYC. Was it due to policy differences or dare I suggest that it might have been due to silent and systemic racism? On affordable housing, I agree it’s needed but this sounds like a very expensive tax-funded project with the potential for it to cost way more per tenant than housing vouchers.
