The National Association of Realtors’ (NAR) Legislative Meetings wrapped up yesterday with the overturn of the organization’s no-commingling policy and a videotape message of support from President Donald Trump.
The rescinded policy enabled multiple listing services (MLSs) to prevent brokers from displaying MLS listings with properties from non-MLS sources. Enforcement of the policy was declining to the point that only 29% of NAR-affiliated MLSs were carrying out the policy.
Separately, President Trump sent a video message to the Washington, DC-based event with praise for the real estate industry.
“I love people that are in the real estate business,” said Trump. “I have a little bit of a proclivity for it. You play a vital role in helping Americans achieve the dream of homeownership, and together, we will make the American dream more attainable than ever before.”
Trump also used his two-minute message to highlight his administration’s economic goals, stating, “We are working to rapidly defeat inflation, which will bring down interest rates and put homeownership within the reach of millions of millions for the first time in years.” He also referenced his Big Beautiful Bill by pledging that his administration was “working to pass the largest tax cuts and reforms in American history.”

i have been selling real estate for 57 years and still love this business
President Trump knows the game. The last administration through the industry under the bus, choosing technology over people! Choosing Felons over children. I’m happy to see that this is getting resolved for the consumers benefit. .
It is time for NAR to stop telling us how we can manage our businesses and stick to advocacy for homeownership. It has become a club.
It’s time for NAR to quit bowing and kissing the ring of Trump! They should not be political and at this point they look like MAGA.
Deb- if you read the article above it does not sound like that is what NAR was doing. It sounds like the President was acknowledging their good work, in this circumstance. Is it bad to be acknowledged for the work you do by our President?
I don’t see how that is true, considering NAR is about as woke as they get these days and Trump is anything but woke. The statement makes no sense.
Debbie Russell I agree with you 👍
GOOD NEWS. WHY HAVE A POLICY THAT REALLY MADE ZERO SENSE AND WAS NOT BEING ENFORCED..
LET’S NOT GET YOUR DISLIKES TOWARD OUR (ELECTED) PRESIDENT TRUMP IN THE WAY OF ACCECPTING A GOOD. I SEE NO “RING KISSING” HERE.
youre just another grouchy whiny kamala voter . ak.a. a karen .cry cry cry
You are so right. I agree with you. NAR is trying to please Trump. keep the industry out of politics. NAR is making decisions that will please Trump.
Stop with the trump support. The proposed tax bill will not cut taxes for our buyers unless you represent the ultra-rich. NAR needs to be a professional organization to support homeownership and Realtors, not a partisan political organization.
I’m pretty sure that the ultra rich are not waiting tables, collecting tips, nor working hourly overtime. Those tax cuts will be for true “working” people.
I concur. With Debbie Russell. NAR has lost its compass. They no longer know what business they are in.
Wake up NAR and CaR. We are in the business of selling and promoting private property ownership and the accompanying 5 rights of property ownership. Possession, control, exclusion, enjoyment and disposition. Until they get their collective heads back in the game they will not have my respect.
During that crazed period of FEAR from march 2020 forward, largely done by our government to the scared masses who they were able to fool into compliance. We have lost many of our private property ownership rights. I’m California it’s a daily assault. Where are CAR and NAR in this fight? I see them on the fringes. Fighting over small battles and missing the focal point!!
Wake up. Socialism is at our doorstep and CAR and NAR and complicit by not standing up and defending to the infinite degree the rights of private property owners.
We should never ever had a system when landlords were selected as the people who could take a hit after the government told workers that they couldn’t go to work! Crazed all the way around.
Now, CAR calls landlords- housing providers. They are not housing providers. They are landlords. Watch their wording. It tells all!!
You nailed it Carole! Thx!!
In New Jersey, some MLSes require a punitive deposit from Brokers/agents
who are not members of NAR. I consider that a discriminatory practice without
just cause. Very surprised that no one has brought a legal action against such
an anti-competitive practice. All Brokers/Agents are required to follow the state
law/rules/regulations whether or not they are members of NAR. I have found
that some of the requirements in the code of conduct stipulated by NAR are
unnecessary, outdated and counter-productive to the objective of marketing
real estate.
Many years ago, I asked my Broker of Record if it was possible to be in real estate
business in NJ without being a member of NAR. And he said: Absolutely Not!
25 years later, I happened to visit a Brokerage firm that was not a member of NAR.
That Broker explained to me that it was not mandatory to join NAR to work as a
Real Estate Agent in NJ.
Does anyone know if the Broker of Record gets secretly rewarded by NAR for each
Agent becoming a member of the NAR? I’m asking this question because one of the
Brokers I worked for used to literally harass agents with reminders after reminders to
pay the dues ahead of the due date even though doing so can create taxation issues,
depending on the Agent’s personal circumstances.
Seems like the political agenda of individuals took over the conversation. Name one of the largest PAC organizations in the country? That’s right, NAR. Much of it is necessary to speak on behalf of the consumer in real estate. But to become one of the largest political action committees in the US one has to become one of the largest organizations. Hence, the low barrier to entry in becoming a real estate agent. Hence, a group that consist of self-serving, unprofessional, greedy, real estate agents. I support increasing the barrier to entry in our business and attempt to create a professional group that is compared to the likes of professions like accounting (CPA), or lawyers. Ask your broker owner, if they had to eliminate independent contractor status and make all your agents employees – how many would you keep on ? I’ve heard numbers like 40%, I’d have to let half go, I’d keep 30-35%. That’s the reality of our business. Do they want to fix it? I don’t think so. It’s multi-level marketing at its best.
You can be a Real Estate Agent without belonging to NAR, you just won’t be a REALTOR. The public should understand that membership in NAR holds the agent to a higher standard. Non-members are not ethically bound to follow the code. Public Beware.
