Summary

Near North Title Group acquired Mason Title & Escrow from AmTrust Financial Services, expanding its Florida footprint from eight to 16 offices; purchase terms were not disclosed.

Near North Title Group has acquired Mason Title & Escrow Company from AmTrust Financial Services, doubling its Florida office network and giving the Chicago-based title agency a much wider presence across one of the country’s busiest housing markets.

The transaction adds eight Mason Title offices to Near North’s existing eight in Florida, taking the total to 16. The companies disclosed the acquisition in an announcement reported by the American Land Title Association on October 13. Financial terms, including the purchase price, were not disclosed.

Near North said the enlarged network stretches from Miami through Tampa and Jacksonville to the Florida Panhandle. The expansion gives it a more extensive platform for residential and commercial closings, attorney relationships and lender work across the state. The precise location and staffing of each office were not itemized in the announcement.

Mason Title had been owned by AmTrust Financial Services. Under the deal, the agency returns to an independent title-agency structure as part of Near North’s operations. Mason’s existing leadership and employees are expected to continue serving customers under the Near North brand, according to the companies.

That continuity will matter to real estate agents, lenders and attorneys whose transactions depend on local staff, established underwriting relationships and county-specific recording practices. Title insurance is issued through underwriters, but the agency handling a closing typically coordinates searches, settlement documents, escrow disbursements and communication among the parties.

Near North chief executive Daniel Fowler said the acquisition fits the company’s long-term growth strategy and combines national scale with local service. Mason president Joseph Sutter described the transaction as an opportunity to broaden the services available to the agency’s existing clients. Those are management’s expectations, not independently verified post-acquisition results.

AmTrust’s stated rationale is different. The sale supports its title-insurance subsidiary’s emphasis on agency relationships and underwriting operations in Florida, according to Manny Netzer, head of its title division. The transaction therefore changes the ownership of a distribution business without establishing that AmTrust is withdrawing from Florida title insurance.

Florida presents a complex settlement market because title practices, attorney involvement and insurance requirements vary by transaction and jurisdiction. A broader office network may help an agency handle customers across multiple regions, but consolidation also raises questions about system integration, retention of experienced escrow staff and continuity of local relationships.

The companies did not disclose whether any offices will be combined, whether employment levels will change or what technology platforms will be used after integration. There is also no published transaction-volume figure or independent estimate of market share resulting from the deal. Those details would be necessary to measure the acquisition’s competitive impact.

Title and escrow businesses have been adapting to uneven home sales, shifting refinance demand and pressure to automate parts of closing. For agencies, acquiring an established regional network can provide relationships and staff that would take years to build organically. It can also introduce integration costs that are not visible in a deal announcement.

For now, the confirmed outcome is straightforward: Near North has bought Mason Title from AmTrust and expanded from eight to 16 Florida offices. Customers should expect continuity from the existing Mason team, while the companies work through the operational changes that follow a change of ownership.
