Nestor R. Weigand Jr., a Kansas real estate executive who served as president of the National Association of Realtors in 1988, passed away on Nov. 1 at the age of 84.

Weigand was born in 1939 and graduated from the University of Notre Dame with a BBA in finance in 1960. He enlisted in the Army after graduation, serving as a first lieutenant and later as a captain. After leaving the Army, he entered real estate, joining J.P. Weigand & Sons, the company founded by his grandfather and later run by his father. He became president and CEO of the company in in 1983 and later became its chairman.

Throughout his career, Weigand was active in the industry’s trade organizations. He was named president of the Wichita Board of Realtors in 1974 and president of the Kansas Association of Realtors in 1978. Also in 1978, he was elected to NAR’s board of directors. He also served as world president of FIABCI (the International Real Estate Federation) in 1992-1993 and in 2001-2002.

Outside of real estate, Weigand was active on the boards of Witchita-area nonprofits. In 1990, sought the Republican nomination for Kansas governor in 1990 and was appointed as the chairman of the Advisory Council of Fannie Mae.
