Project Renewal opened Willow Tree Commons in Midtown Manhattan, combining 130 supportive and affordable studio apartments, a 171-bed emergency shelter for women and an on-site healthcare clinic.
Project Renewal has opened a 21-story Midtown Manhattan development that combines permanent supportive housing, emergency shelter beds and healthcare in a single purpose-built property.
Willow Tree Commons at 225 East 45th Street includes 130 supportive and affordable studio apartments, a 171-bed emergency shelter for women and an on-site healthcare clinic serving residents, shelter guests and the surrounding community.
Housing and shelter designed as separate programs
The supportive housing and shelter components have separate entrances and dedicated amenities while sharing the same building. Project Renewal said residents of the permanent housing will have access to case management, occupational therapy, mental healthcare and community-building services.
The development replaces a women’s shelter that Project Renewal had operated on the site since 1998 in a building that was not originally designed for shelter use.
The new Canopy House shelter is designed for women with mental-health diagnoses and includes a full kitchen, cafeteria and indoor and outdoor recreation areas. The on-site Article 28 clinic will provide primary care, psychiatry and dental services.
The project is an example of supportive-housing development moving beyond a stand-alone residential model by integrating permanent housing with health and homelessness services in the same real estate footprint.
