The 2026 race for governor of Maine has a new candidate in David Jones, broker-owner of the Augusta-based F.O. Bailey Real Estate.

Spectrum News reports this is the second time that the 69-year-old Jones sought elected office – he ran for governor in 2006 as an independent but withdrew before getting on the ballot. For this race, he is running as a Republican – he previously served as a delegate to the party’s national convention and has raised funds for local GOP candidates.

Jones is focusing his campaign on creating a smaller and more efficient state government.

“If you can’t afford gas in the car or groceries, you are not free,” he said. “Let’s get government out of the way and let entrepreneurs be free.”

The race for governor has already attracted multiple candidates – former Bush administration official Bobby Charles is also seeking the Republican nomination while Democratic candidates include Angus King III, the son of US Sen. Angus King.
