SoFi Technologies reported $1.36 billion in home loan originations during the third quarter of 2026, a 44% increase from a year earlier, as home equity lending accounted for a substantial share of the digital lender’s mortgage business.

According to the company’s October 27 earnings announcement, home loan volume totaled $1.361 billion for the three months ended September 30, compared with $944.7 million during the same period of 2025.

Home equity loans represented approximately 40% of third-quarter home loan originations, the company said. That mix is significant as lenders look for opportunities beyond traditional home-purchase and rate-and-term refinance lending.

Mortgage Growth Outpaces a Challenging Housing Market

SoFi’s nine-month home loan originations reached approximately $3.98 billion, up 76% from $2.26 billion in the comparable 2025 period. The company reported approximately 72,000 home loan products at quarter-end.

Those figures describe SoFi’s own lending activity, not the performance of the U.S. mortgage industry as a whole. Its expansion should therefore not be read as evidence that mortgage demand increased at the same rate nationally.

Record Originations Across the Business

SoFi originated $16.9 billion in loans across its lending businesses during the quarter, up 71% from a year earlier. Personal loan originations reached $12.6 billion, while student loan originations totaled $2.9 billion.

The company also reported approximately $1.4 billion in adjusted net revenue and $241 million in GAAP net income. It raised its full-year 2026 financial guidance.

SoFi said it closed $1.4 billion in home loan sales during the quarter. The company’s combination of origination activity and loan sales highlights the importance of capital markets execution to its lending model.

What the Results Mean for Mortgage Lenders

For mortgage professionals, the standout figure is not just the annual increase in home loan volume but the share attributable to home equity. With many existing homeowners carrying mortgages originated at lower interest rates, home equity products can offer access to property wealth without replacing a first mortgage.

SoFi did not provide a separate national mortgage market forecast in the earnings release. Its results nevertheless offer a company-level illustration of how lenders are adapting their product mix.
