Sotheby’s International Realty has named Mark McLaughlin its next president and chief executive officer, effective November 1, 2026, as longtime leader Philip White moves into the role of executive chairman.

The luxury brokerage announced the leadership transition Thursday, October 22, as the brand marks its 50th anniversary. White, who joined the organization in 1980 and has served as CEO since 2013, will shift his focus from day-to-day management to global growth, agent recruitment and retention, and the brand’s relationship with Sotheby’s auction house.

A brokerage veteran takes the helm

McLaughlin has more than three decades of experience in real estate brokerage operations, acquisitions and strategic advisory work. As chief executive of Pacific Union International from 2009 to 2018, he oversaw 12 mergers and acquisitions and helped grow the firm to approximately $14.1 billion in annual sales volume before its acquisition by Compass in 2018.

He subsequently worked with Compass and advised brokerage leaders on expansion and operating strategy. His appointment places an executive with extensive consolidation experience at the head of a major global luxury real estate brand.

White shifts to international expansion

During White’s leadership tenure, Sotheby’s International Realty grew into a network spanning 86 countries and territories and more than 1,100 offices. The brand reported approximately $182 billion in global sales volume for 2025.

White will remain involved as executive chairman, concentrating on international expansion and the company’s relationship with the Sotheby’s auction business.

Why the change matters

The appointment comes as Sotheby’s International Realty operates within the Compass International Holdings ecosystem following Compass’s acquisition of Anywhere Real Estate. The brokerage sector continues to face questions about consolidation, technology investment and the balance between global scale and local brand identity.

McLaughlin’s history of building brokerage businesses through acquisitions makes the leadership choice noteworthy, although the company has not announced any specific new acquisition plan in connection with his appointment.
