Wells Fargo has appointed Kleber Santos sole CEO of Consumer Banking and Lending, ending the division’s co-CEO structure, while Saul Van Beurden moves into a dedicated role leading artificial intelligence across the bank.
The bank announced the changes October 22. Both executives continue to report to Chairman and CEO Charlie Scharf and remain members of the Operating Committee.
Consumer banking and AI priorities separated
Santos will lead consumer deposits, credit cards, business banking and auto lending. Van Beurden will work with technology chief Bridget Engle and other executives to expand enterprise AI adoption and relationships with AI companies.
Wells Fargo also offers residential mortgage products and services. However, the announcement does not establish changes to mortgage origination, underwriting, servicing or staffing. Its direct effect on home lending remains to be seen.
Scharf said the bank sees significant opportunities to expand consumer banking while transforming operations through AI. The restructuring gives the two priorities separate executive ownership.
