New York City’s Department of Buildings halted work on another office-to-residential construction project.
The Wall Street Journal reports construction was paused at 750 Third Avenue, a 35-story office building that is being converted by developer SL Green (NYSE: SLG) into a 600-unit multifamily development. The pause came after inspectors discovered several steel columns at the site were reinforced in a manner that differed from the design plans approved by the city. Updated documentation on the columns was not provided to the city inspector, which resulted in the work being stopped.
“There are no structural issues with the building, and we are already working with the licensed professional engineer of record to address this condition,” said a spokeswoman for SL Green.
City officials have been taking closer looks at ongoing office-to-residential conversion after work on the former Pfizer headquarters was stopped when support columns began to buckle and forced the evacuation of the construction site. A partial stop-work order for another conversion project at 77 Water Street in Manhattan’s Financial District was issued earlier this month but was lifted days later, while a similar project at 222 Broadway was halted amid concerns of structural safety.
SL Green has scheduled its project to be completed in 2029.
