President Trump has abruptly cancelled today’s Capitol Hill signing of the 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act, stating he would approve the bipartisan legislation until Congress passed the SAVE America Act.

The SAVE America Act, which would require proof of citizenship for voting in federal elections with government-issued photo identification, has narrowly passed the House of Representatives but stalled in the Senate, where it lacks the 60 votes needed for passage. While Trump previously signaled support for the housing bill, he has repeatedly stated the SAVE America Act was a legislative priority for his administration.

“Today’s Housing News Conference and Signing is hereby cancelled until such time as we pass the desperately needed SAVE AMERICA ACT, which I consider to be a National Emergency,” wrote Trump in a series of Truth Social posts announcing his surprise decision.

“The Elizabeth ‘Pocahontas’ Warren centric housing bill, which is of minor importance compared to lower interest rates, and even FISA, pales in comparison to passing THE SAVE AMERICA ACT,” he continued. “That is what Americans, both Dumocrats, Republicans, and everyone else, care about. Get the bad Republicans to approve it or, better yet, Terminate the Filibuster and approve it, AND EVERYTHING ELSE REPUBLICANS HAVE EVER DREAMED OF. The Dumocrats will do it in hour one, 100%. Republicans will feel very stupid if they don’t do it first. I’ll be watching with tears in my eyes!!!”

Trump did not say that he would veto the housing legislation, which passed with overwhelming bipartisan support in both chambers of Congress. The Constitution enables a bill to become law automatically after 10 days from its passage without the President’s signature if Congress is in session. If Congress adjourns while a bill is not signed, the bill is subject to a pocket veto. However, the Republican-controlled Congress could also delay sending the bill to the White House indefinitely.
