The campus of a defunct college in upstate New York is being repositioned as a law enforcement training center.
The former property of Cazenovia College is being leased for the next two years as the home of the New York State Police Auxiliary Academy. The lease encompasses the 27-acre, 14-parcel main campus as well as the Schneeweiss Athletic Complex, with its gyms, offices, training room, racquetball court and locker rooms.
The campus is located in Cazenovia, a village 20 miles south of Syracuse. The college was founded in 1824 and was originally a Methodist seminary. The church’s sponsorship was withdrawn in 1942 and the school was reorganized as a junior college and later became a college for women before becoming co-educational in 1982. It announced it would close last December amid financial difficulties and the campus was put up for sale by A&G Real Estate Partners in April.
“A significant portion of the Cazenovia College workers will be retained or rehired as a result of this lease, which will boost economic activity in the Cazenovia community and beyond,” said Emilio Amendola, co-president of A&G and head of the New York-based firm’s real estate sales division.
The leased space will be able to accommodate up to 275 police recruits and 115 instructors, and the first academy class is scheduled to start in October.
